Susannah Bridges Burley w/ Katie Tabor, Current Tool/Reflections (2011), single-channel video loop projection (no run time given).

C: I found this visually fascinating, but wasn't sure I understood what the objects shown in the video were. It looked like billiards balls chasing around, only they seemed to be on a stem – with a pool cue pointing into the video – but then there was another element that looked maybe like a corner of a white fence?

Otte: What appeared to be a fence was a concrete structural element from a bridge over a body of water. I love the way the projected light further articulates, almost "caresses" the detailed filligree of the oval frame, and bringing it to life. The orbs are colored balloons connected by a string. They are a utilitarian contraption or "tool" used to gauge the direction of the current in that body of water. In my judgement, the video is strong in and of itself. Very lyrical - almost early Modernist in feeling-tone. It calls to mind the abstract paintings of Francis Picabia's set into motion or a visual equivalent of Erik Satie's "Trois Gymnopedies" piano pieces. I worked with Susannah to test the projection in a number of scenarios at The Pearl. We were at first very excited about projecting it on the oval mirror in the barroom, thus engaging existing elements. Of course, The Pearl presents many opportunities for added layers and reflections. Many unexpected and uncanny visual "gifts" revealed themselves throughout the process of installation. I think the video would work well in many different settings, even framed like a painting.
